Frequently Asked Questions
What is paintball and what is the object of the game?
Paintball is recognized as one of the world’s most exciting outdoor participation sports. Paintball is sport played in over 50 countries by millions of people from all ages, professions and lifestyles. It is a sport where women and men compete equally, and where age is not dominated by youth. Physical size and strength are not as important as intelligence and determination. Whether high school students, homemakers, professionals or retirees, all paintball players share in common a love for adventure and a strong competitive spirit.
A paintball is a round, thin-skinned gelatin capsule with colored liquid inside. Paintballs are similar to large vitamin capsules. The fill inside a paintball is nontoxic, water-soluble and biodegradable. It rinses out of clothing and off your skin with mild soap and water.

Paintguns, also called “markers,” come in a variety of shapes and styles. They are powered by carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrogen (N2) or compressed air bottles. Many have power systems that use large refillable cylinders called “tanks” or “bottles” that give hundreds of shots before needing to be refilled.
The game of paintball is a combination of the childhood games “tag” and “hide & seek,” but is much more challenging and sophisticated. Like a game of chess, being able to think quickly and decisively is what makes you a star. Paintball is also a character-building sport. Players learn the importance of teamwork and gain self-confidence and develop leadership abilities while having fun.
Although there are many different game formats, typically a group of players will divide into two teams to play “capture the flag.” The number of players on each team can vary, limited only by the size of the playing field. For safety, players always must wear approved-for paintball goggles. While you are trying to capture the flag, you also try to eliminate opposing players by tagging them with a paintball expelled from your paintgun (marker).
Games have time limits of 10 to 20 minutes, but may vary by the number of players and size of the field.
Referees on the field start and stop games, enforce the rules of fair play, and control the sport’s safety.
Paintball is a fun, safe and exciting sport, once the adrenaline starts pumping, you can’t help love the thrill of the game.
REMEMBER IT’S NOT JUST A GAME,
IT’S AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE
Paintball’s superb safety record compared to other sports is largely attributed to the attention that has been paid to safety concerns from the very beginnings of the game.
Like any other activity or sport, there is always the potential for injury. However, referees enforce standard safety and playing rules, and the proper use of industry developed and approved safety equipment have made paintball one of the safest participatory sports.
What’s that & Why is it used?
Chronographs are mandatory for paintball. These devices measure the velocity at which the paintball is leaving the marker. Paintball markers velocity must be adjusted so that three consecutive shots thru the chronograph do not exceed 280 feet per second. All field rental paintball markers must be chronographed before being issued to players. All other markers must be chronographed prior to any activity.
Getting hit by a fast moving pellet is part of the game. Fortunately, it isn’t as bad as one thinks. Paintballs break upon impact dissipating most of the energy and causing very little pain. What pain is felt is comparable to being snapped by a towel and goes away after a few seconds. Of course, being hit at close range will tend to accentuate the sensation than a hit from further away.
"For this reason Medley Paintball Park strictly enforces"
1. Velocity of a fired paintball (chronograph) 280 feet per second.
2. “Ten Foot Rule” (no player will be allowed to shot an opposing player closer than ten feet)
3. “No Overshooting” (not more than three con- tinues shots per elimination). Generally though, the thrill of the game will overshadow any pain that might be felt from a hit.
What are the chances of serious injury?
When on the field players must ALWAYSwear protective goggles which are part of a special mask that protects the eyes, ears, face, and neck. When not on the field barrel covers are inserted into the paintball marker to prevent paintballs from leaving the barrel. Safety is highly stressed with orientations given at the beginning of each session and referees/staff members on hand oversee the players
Paintball is a serious game with the potential of injury if you are not careful. The minimum age to play at Medley Paintball Park is 10 years old. Anyone under the age of 18 will also need their parent’s/guardian’s permission to play.
